 Natural Pastures Cheese
“The Comox Valley is unique in the world for the quality of life it can provide a farmer producing on the land while enjoying a healthy lifestyle.”
- Edgar Smith
The Smith family owns and operates Beaver Meadow Farms, a 700 acre dairy farm. Currently 50% of the milk yield is used to produce their award winning Natural Pastures Cheese. The secret is in the land. Salt rain off the Pacific Ocean, clean air and rich soil give their cheeses a rich herbal earthiness that is sought after by Chef’s and connoisseurs around the world. Pesticide free, Beaver Meadow Farms is a Certified Heritage Farm, the only one in Canada.
Hazelmere Farms
The Huas moved here from Taiwan in 1999, purchasing their 63 acre farm. Their main crops are Certified Organic wasabi and oriental vegetables. In their green houses they grow organic figs, melons, peppers, eggplant and tomatoes as well as oriental vegetables. The farm offers them rich fertile soil, an abundance of clean water and fresh air, making organic farming possible. Their wasabi crop is sold locally and shipped to restaurants in Vancouver and Toronto. Additional products include wasabi spreads, dressing and hummus as well as pork wanton, using Tannadice Farms pork. Natural Pastures Cheese Company uses Hazelmere wasabi in their award-winning Wasabi Verdelait.
Fanny Bay Oysters
“We are blessed with the opportunity to live at the best place on earth to grow world class oysters.”
- Glen and Sharon Hadden
Over half of BC’s shellfish production is grown in Baynes Sound, home of Fanny Bay Oysters. The environment is the best in the world for growing shellfish due to the clean Pacific waters, enriched by the nutrients flowing from mountain streams in combination with favourably consistent sunlight. Weekly shipments throughout North America amount to 10,000,000 oysters processed annually in their 20,000 sq. ft. state-of-the-art processing plant situated on three acres of waterfront property. The Hadden’s pride themselves in their environmental stewardship and sustainability practices, allowing this industry to grow for generations to come.
Natural Glacial Waters
“If we didn’t have access to some of the best water in the world we wouldn’t be here.”
- Jack Liang
Natural Glacial Waters, formed in 1993, recognized the potential demand for clean Vancouver Island water and opened its plant locally in 1998. Drawing from two sources; the Rosewall and Sayward Aquafers, their bottled water is shipped almost entirely to Japan and Taiwan. Over 10 million 500ml bottles are shipped annually – a fraction of what the aquafers can yield without affecting their annual levels. Natural Glacier Waters sees consistent growth for the future as the world demand for clean drinking water increases.
