Wildly sophisticated.
      Economically unconventional.

Opportunities

Opportunities for niche farming of speciality crops, organics along with food and beverage processing activities exist throughout the Valley. Lower land costs compared to other regions of the province provide a competitive advantage to entrepreneurs and investors that wish to pursue and develop agricultural business operations in the following areas:

  • Value-added frozen food and seafood products, fruit and vegetable processing, seasonings and dressings
  • Beverage manufacturing (e.g. juices) and wineries
  • Food product wholesalers, agriculture and aquaculture suppliers

In the last decade the number of farms has increased by 6% and the land area farmed by 32%, one of the few areas in the province to show an increase.

Over 180 different crop commodities are grown here, including specialty items like organics, spouts, wasabi, cranberries and vineyards. There are a number of other unique and exciting niche businesses in development, including Canada’s second single malt distillery.

Plenty of local market opportunities.
Less than 15% of Vancouver Island’s food requirements are produced locally. With the Island’s population rapidly approaching one million, the Comox Valley is an excellent location for producers, processors and investors to base an agrifood operation and experience the benefits.

Aquaculture is important, processing potential is significant.

Baynes Sound, located just south of Courtenay between Denman and Vancouver Islands is considered the best area for shellfish aquaculture in BC. The province’s industry accounts for more than half the total aquaculture in Canada, generating an average of $8 million in revenues, just over half the BC total production
